The Akita Dog

The Akita dog originates from Japan dating back to the 1600's. It is the largest of the native Japanese breeds and is the national dog of Japan. It is also considered one of Japan's national treasures. The most famous Akita is probably Hachiko, who went to the train station every day to greet his master as he came home from work. One day his master died at work. For the next nine years, until his own death, Hachiko faithfully met the train everyday anticipating his master's return. The first Akita was brought to America in 1937 by Helen Keller. More were brought to America by returning servicemen after WW II. The AKC recognized the breed in 1972.
