The American Eskimo Dog
The American Eskimo Dog originates from the United States dating to the early 1900's. Although it may look like a sled dog, it is not nor does it descend from sled dogs. Its ancestry is believed to includes a variety of German Spitz type dogs plus breeds such as the Keeshond and Pomeranian. It has a natural instinct for guarding and makes an excellent watch dog. Some may bark a little excessively since they take the guarding role very seriously.
When this breed first appeared in America, the dogs were used as circus performers. The breed became more popular after 1920 and was finally recognized by the AKC in 1994.
There are three recognized size categories for this breed. They are the toy, the miniature and the standard. The categories
are defined by animal height. (see table below)
The American Eskimo dog is a great family dog. It loves to be with its family. If allowed, it will sleep on the bed or couch to be as close as possible. It is always happy and often appears to be smiling and dancing. However, because of its guarding instinct, it will be reserved with strangers and will bark at intruders and potential intruders whenever the doorbell rings.
