The American Staffordshire Terrier Dog

The American Staffordshire Terrier dog originates from the United States dating back to the 1800's. It is often confused with the Staffordshire Bull Terrier and the American Pit Bull Terrier (plus cross breeds of these three) and termed a "pit bull". There is common ancestry and a complicated history behind these three breeds, but they are not the same. In fact the term 'pit bull' is a derogatory term used to discredit one or more of these breeds as dangerous and unpredictable. One additional complication is that the AKC does not recognize the American Pit Bull Terrier, while the UKC does. This page contains information on the American Staffordshire Terrier dog only.
