The American Water Spaniel Dog



The exact origins of the American Water Spaniel dog are not known. Many experts believe it's ancestors include the Irish Water Spaniel, the Curly Coated Retriever, and the English Water Spaniel. It is an excellent and versatile hunting dog. It loves the water and is well suited to hunt from a boat or canoe with it's master.

Origin United States dating back to the 1800's.

Temperament It is a dog that naturally loves the water. It's first love is to go hunting, but it can be a friendly and fun loving family dog. It is intelligent, obedient and willing to please.

Coat Has a two layered water proof medium length coat. The outer coat can be wavy or curly.

Colors Solid dark brown, brown, or liver. May have a touch of white on the feet or chest.
Height and Weight Ideal weight is 25 to 45 pounds (11.25 to 20.5 kg) while the ideal height is 15 to 18 inches (38 to 45.75 cm). Variations may occur in individual animals.
Life Expectancy 11 to 12 years.
Group The AKC places the American Water Spaniel dog in the Sporting group.
