The Anatolian Shepherd Dog

The Anatolian Shepherd dog originates from Turkey dating back to the Middle Ages. It was used by nomadic tribes to protect sheep. The name shepherd is technically not correct since it is a protector not a herder. On the protection side though, it has proved itself as a very capable protector, being able to defending the herds from wolves and even bears. The first Anatolian's came to America in the 1950's where they were initially used to guard livestock. The AKC placed the Anatolian shepherd dog in the Miscellaneous Class in 1996 and moved it to the Working Group in 1998. Today it remains mainly a livestock guardian.

It is loving with and devoted to its family and takes its job of protector seriously. It is even tempered and well mannered. It is quick to bark when it suspects any intruder. Exercise As with all working dogs, the Anatolian Shepherd dog requires lots of daily exercise. Coat It has a two layered coat. The outer coat is short and dense. The undercoat is thick and softer. Grooming Minimal grooming required. Colors It comes in a variety of colors, the most common coloration is fawn with black in the face. Height and Weight Weight range is 90 to 150 pounds (40.8 to 68 kg) while the height range is 28 to 32 inches (71 to 81 cm). Variations may occur in individual animals. Life Expectancy 10 - 13 years. Group The AKC places the Anatolion Shepherd dog in the Working group.
