The Australian Terrier Dog

The Australian Terrier dog orginates from Australia. It shares its ancestry with Yorkshire and Skye terriers, and the similarities in appearance are obvious. It is very adaptable and is suited equally well to country or city living.

Origin Australia - early 1900's.
Original Use Watch dog, killing small vermin including snakes.
Use Today Companion
Temperament It is an even tempered dog that is loving, happy, brave, and courageous. It is always ready for adventure or a chance to go exploring. It is willing to please.
Acceptance of: Other Dogs - Average - will not back down when threatened.
Other Pets - Average, better if raised with other aminals.
Strangers - Not very accepting.
Children - Good
Watchdog Ability Excellent
Guard dog Ability Below average
Ease of Training Good
Living Conditions Can live outside in temperate climates, but does make an ideal apartment dog.
Exercise Requires daily exercise such as a moderate walk or an invigorating play time.
Coat It has a two layered medium length straight wiry coat. The undercoat is softer and shorter than the outer.
Grooming Requires weekly combing.
Colors Blue and tan or solid red/sandy.
Height and Weight Weight range is 12 to 14 pounds (5.5 to 6.4kg) , height range is 10 to 11 inches (25.4 to 28 cm). Variations may occur in individual animals.
Life Expectancy 13 to 14 years.
Group The AKC places the Australian Terrier dog in the Terrier group.
