The Basenji Dog

The Basenji dog originates from Central Africa dating back to antiquity; its exact origins are unknown. Its name, Basenji means 'bush thing'. It is one of the oldest dog breeds. Drawing of dogs resembling the Basenji are found in Egyptian tombs dating back more than 4000 years. The breed was successfully introduced to England in the 1930's. More breeding stock was brought from Africa in the 1980's in order to provide a larger gene pool and to overcome some hereditary problems. This breed's popularity took a sudden surge in the 1956 with the release of the move Good-bye, My Lady starring a Basenji dog. The Basenji does not bark, but does have vocals that are more like a yodel or laugh.
