The Basset Hound Dog

The Basset Hound dog originates from France. It is descendent in part from the Blood Hound and retains an extremely good sense of smell. Its most well known physical traits are its long droopy ears and low slung body. It is believed that the ears stir up scent which is then caught up in them and in the face wrinkles until it is processed by its powerful nose. While on walks it will pick up on many scents trails and get easily distracted to the point of being lost while following the track. The Basset Hound dog was introduced to England and to North America in the 1800's. Popularity came slowly but steadily. Today the charming and dignified Basset is ranked in the top 25 by the American Kennel Club.
