The Bearded Collie Dog

The Bearded Collie dog originates from Great Britain dating back to around the 1500's. It was nearly extinct by the 1940's after which time its numbers began to revive. Most of today's Beardies are descended from one single breeding pair dating back to 1941.

Temperament Is alert and playful, has tons of energy. It is a smart even tempered dog that is obedient and self assured.

Living Conditions Can live outside in moderate to cool climates. Is just as happy to live indoors with its family.
Exercise Needs lots of exercise plus mental stimulation.
Coat Has a two layered coat. The outer coat is consists of long harsh hair that naturally lies flat. It may be slightly wavy. The shorter undercoat is soft and lies close to the body.
Grooming Needs brushing every few days.
Colors Comes in a variety of colors: Black, brown, blue, fawn, and gray; all of these may be accompanied by some white. Color may lighten with age.
Height and Weight Ideal weight is 45 to 60 pounds (20.5 to 27.25 kg) while the ideal height is 20 to 22 inches (50.75 to 56 cm). Variations may occur in individual animals.
Life Expectancy 12 to 13 years.
Group The AKC places the Bearded Collie in the herding group.
