The Belgian Sheepdog
The Belgian Sheepdog shares a common ancestry with the
Belgian Malinois, and the Belgian Tervuren. All three were considered one breed until 1891 when separate breed standards were developed.
Interbreeding may have continued after 1891 causing confusion when distinguishing the breeds. To add to the confusion,
all three breeds are known by the alternate name of Chien de Berger Belge. The Belgian Sheepdog has an additional alternate name - Groenendail.
Of the three breeds, the Belegian Sheepdog is recognized by its striking black coat.
