The Briard Dog

The Briard dog originates from France dating back to the 1300's. It was originally used for guarding flocks and later as a herding dog. Its popularity in North America rose after World War I.

Loving, obedient and dependable companion. It is lively, intelligent, and willing to please. It has a strong herding instinct.

Living Conditions Can live outdoor in moderate to cool climates, but is also happy to live indoors with its family.
Exercise Requires a lot of regular exercise. It makes a good jogging or cycling companion.
Coat Has a two layered coat. The outer coat consists of long coarse hair that may be slightly wavy. It lays flat and close to the body. The dense inner coat consists of softer, shorter fine hair that also lays flat. Hair should not completely cover the eyes.
Grooming Requires grooming every second day.
Colors Black, brown, and shades of gray.
Height and Weight Ideal weight is 75 to 100 pounds (34 to 45kg) while the ideal height is 22 to 27 inches (56 to 68.5 cm). Variations may occur in individual animals.
Life Expectancy 11 to 13 years.
Group The AKC places the Briard dog in the herding group.
