The Bulldog

The Bulldog originates from Great Britain dating to the early 1800's. Its ancestors were used for bull baiting and thus were bred for their vicious and tenacious temperament. When bull baiting became illegal in 1835 the breed's popularity plummeted. However, a concerted effort was undertake to develop a gentler dog without changing its appearance. The breeding effort was quite successful, giving us the modern version whose appearance remains essentially unchanged but whose personality is nothing like that of its predecessors. Today it is gentle, even tempered and more mellow than most breeds. In spite of its good nature, it is very possessive of its food and should be fed in a separate area away from other dogs or pets so as to avoid problems. The fact that it drools and snores may be a concern for some people.
