The Chinese Shar-pei Dog
The Chinese Shar-pei dog originates from China dating back to the 1300's, possibly earlier. Although its exact ancestry is not known, it
is believed to be related to the Chow Chow. At the time of the communist revolution in China, the breed was quite common and was used by peasant
farmers for guarding, hunting, and even as a fighting dog. With the revolution came almost the total extinction of all
dogs in China. The breed survived because it had been exported to Hong Kong and Taiwan. Some were imported to America in
the 1960's but popularity remained low. A decade later this rare breed was 'discovered' and popularity soared to the point where
today, ranks in the top 35 in North America. It is a unique looking dog with loose wrinkly skin, clamshell ears, sunken eyes, wide powerful jaws, and muzzle that resembles a hippopotamus.
