The Chow Chow Dog
The Chow Chow dog originates in from China dating back to antiquity. Its exact origins are not known. It was first used as a guard dog, cart puller, and also as food and a fur animal. It was imported to Great Britain in the 1700's and later into America. Popularity took a
while to establish, but eventually it became very popular reaching its peak in the 1980's. It comes in a rough and smooth coat varieties, although the smooth coat is rare compared to the rough coat. It is one of the few breeds that has a black tongue.

It is content to live outdoors and can tolerate a fair amount of cold. |
| Exercise |
It requires regular exercise such as a walk or exploring time in a safe area. It is not a dog that likes to play, so a game or play time may not be suitable. |
| Coat |
It has a two layered coat. The outer coat stands away from the body. It is profuse, thick, and soft. The undercoat is softer and wooly. The smooth coat variety has a shorter outer coat. |

The smooth type requires brushing once a week while the longer haired rough coat requires brushing twice a week or more. |

It comes in black, blue, cream, fawn and red. |
