The English Foxhound Dog
The English Foxhound dog originates from Great Britain dating back to the 1700's. At one time the English Foxhound differed
in size and build depending from which part of the country it originated. Today those differenced have
mainly disappeared, with only individual animals varying slightly. As foxhunting gained popularity among the wealthy, special
roles called Masters of the Foxhounds were developed. These Masters took care of the packs for the wealthy and were also
in charge of the breeding programs. Foxhunting was a ceremonious event. The dogs had to look attractive both individually
and as a pack. Thus a pack would often share the same coat colors. Known for its keen nose and unique melodious
voice, The English Foxhound of today retains a strong hunting instinct and is still popular with hunters who want to use horses while
being accompanied by hunting dogs. It has not become very popular as a companion or show dog. However, those who keep it
for a companion find that indeed it makes a fine companion as long as its social needs are met with lots of human or
canine contact.
