The Field Spaniel Dog

The Field Spaniel dog originates from Great Britain dating back to around the 1800's. It shares a common ancestry with the English Cocker Spaniel. Initially the only difference between the two was size. (If the dog weighed 25 pounds (11.3 kg) or more it was a Field Spaniel, otherwise it was a Cocker.) After being recognized as a separate breed in the 1800's selective breeding led to exaggerations in build and a severe drop in popularity. The breed nearly became extinct. In the 1950's a successful cross breeding program with English Springer Spaniels fortunately restored the original Field Spaniel dog. Today it is an able hunter and likeable family companion.
