The Finnish Spitz Dog

The Finnish Spitz dog originates from Finland where today it is the national dog. Although it is almost exclusively a companion in North America, it still has an important role as a hunter in its native Finland. The breed dates back to antiquity. It remained pure because of its isolation until the 1800's. At that time interbreeding with other breeds became a problem. However through the efforts of a few dedicated hunters, a pure bloodline was preserved. Today the breed is common in Great Britain and North America as well as in its homeland.

Origin Finland - antiquity
Original Use Small animal and bird hunting
Use Today Hunting, companion
Temperament It is alert, attentive and usually devoted to only one person. It is curious, even tempered and happy. It can have a stubborn and independent side to it. Most bark a lot because barking is an integral part of its hunting style - a part of its heritage that most retain quite strongly.

Exercise Since it is a hunting breed by nature, it requires a good amount of daily exercise such as a long walk or exploring time in a safe area.
Coat It has a two layered coat. The outer coat is short, straight and harsh, consisting of hair 2 inches (5 cm) long or less. The undercoat is thick, soft, and shorter. The coat has very little oil, hence it is nearly odorless.
Grooming Requires brushing about once a week.
Colors It comes in varying shades of golden red.
