It is alert, attentive and usually devoted to only one person. It is curious, even tempered and happy. It can have a stubborn and independent side to it. Most bark a lot because barking is an integral part of its hunting style - a part of its heritage that most retain quite strongly. |

| Living Conditions |
Can live outdoors in most cool or cold climates. Does not do well in hot climates. It is happy to live indoors as well, providing its exercise needs are met outdoors. |

Since it is a hunting breed by nature, it requires a good amount of daily exercise such as a long walk or exploring time in a safe area. |
| Coat |
It has a two layered coat. The outer coat is short, straight and harsh, consisting of hair 2 inches (5 cm) long or less. The undercoat is thick, soft, and shorter. The coat has very little oil, hence it is nearly odorless. |

Requires brushing about once a week. |
