The French Bulldog
The French Bulldog descended from Bulldogs imported to France from England in the 1800's. The erect ears seen in
the breed was an undesirable feature in England, but a sought after trait in France. Thus in France
the dog was bred to have erect ears and became a distinct breed. Its popularity soared in France and many specimens were soon imported into America.
The first American dog show for the breed was held in 1898. Although still common today,
popularity reached its height in the early 1900's.
