The German Pinscher Dog

The German Pinscher dog, also known as the Standard Pinscher,(sometimes misspelled as the German Pincher or Standard Pincher) originates from Germany dating back to the 1700's. It is quite likely one of the ancestors of the Miniature Pinscher, Doberman Pinscher, and the Affenpinscher. It is also likely related to the Standard Schnauzer. It is a fairly rare breed, but those who own one agree that it makes an excellent companion. It is intelligent and strong willed, thus needs consistent but fair discipline. Because of the turmoil in Germany, the breed was nearly lost following World War II. Registrations for this breed were zero from 1949 to 1958. A man named Werner Jung is credited with saving the breed. He carefully bred some typical German Pinschers that could still be found in rural areas while introducing limited cross breeding with a few Miniature Pinschers. Most of today's German Pinscher dogs are descendents of Jung's program.
