The Havanese Dog

CH YUP's Patch Adams
Picture of Havanese dog Courtesy - Janet Birdsall

Ancestors of the Havanese originated from countries surrounding the Mediterranean basin in Europe. It is believed these dogs were introduced to Cuba by Spanish traders. The current purebred Havanese dogs originate from breeding stock imported to the United States from Cuba after the Cuban revolution of 1959. The Havanese was first recognized by the AKC in 1995, but was not entered in the toy group until 1999.
