The Irish Wolfhound Dog
The Irish Wolfhound dog originates from Ireland dating back to antiquity. If properly trained, it is one of the most gentle
breeds, in spite of the fact that it is the largest of all dog breeds. This gentle giant was probably brought to Ireland by
invading Roman armies. It was popular in the middle ages during which time it was often given as a gift to visiting foreign
dignitaries. As the wolf became extinct in Ireland in the eighteenth century, one of the main purposes for breeding the
Irish Wolfhound disappeared. With the famine of 1845, the breed nearly died out. It was revived however, mainly
through the efforts of Captain G. A. Graham, a British Army Officer. Today it enjoys moderate popularity. Would be owners
should be mindful, a dog this size needs a lot of room to run and exercise and is best suited for country living.
