The Italian Greyhound Dog

The Italian Greyhound dog, as the name suggests, originates from Italy. Ancestors of dog are assumed to date back well over 2000 years and are believed to have come from Greece, Turkey, and Egypt. The Italian Greyhound dog has been a companion to many famous people throughout history including James I of England, Queen Victoria, Anne of Denmark, Frederick the Great of Prussia, and Catherine the Great of Russia. Not an insignificant list of historic celebrities! Although it may give the impression of being delicate, it is in fact a reasonably hardy dog.

Temperament It is calm and relaxed, and at the same time has a lively side, enjoying a good outdoor game of fetch or frisbee. This little companions shows a lot of affection and is usually quite attached to it's owner.
Acceptance of: Other Dogs - Very good.
Other Pets - Very good.
Strangers - Somewhat reserved.
Children - Good.

Guard dog Ability Poor
Ease of Training Good
Living Conditions Cannot tolerate cold climates. Not suited for outdoor living. Equally suited to urban or rural settings.
Exercise Requires daily exercise that can best be met by a good walk or run outside. Indoor activity is second best.
Coat Very short coat that is almost odorless
Grooming Little or no grooming required.
Colors Comes in almost any color.
Height and Weight Ideal weight is 7 to 8 pounds (3 to 3.6 kg) while the ideal height is 13 to 15 inches (33 to 38 cm). Variations may occur in individual animals.
Life Expectancy 13 to 14 years.
Group The AKC places the Italian Greyhound dog in the toy group.
