The Keeshond Dog

The Keeshond dog originates from The Netherlands dating back to at least the 1600's, possibly earlier. It was originally used as watch dog on river barges. Although its exact origins are uncertain, it is believed to be related to the group known collectively as the Spitz family of dogs including the Samoyed. It resembles the pomeranian in a larger version. A feature unique to this dog is its smile - it literally shows its teeth in a friendly looking grin! Popularity has taken a roller coaster ride over the years, but today it is very popular in its native homeland and is recognized as the national dog of Holland.
