The Kerry Blue Terrier Dog

The Kerry Blue Terrier dog originates from the county of Kerry in the Southwest of Ireland. It is truly a versatile hunter and companion. It can be used to herd, to hunt, to retrieve (on land or water) and to guard. Along with the shamrock it is a symbol of Ireland.

Origin Ireland - 1700's.
Original Use Fox, badger, rat hunting
Use Today Companion, rat hunting
Temperament It is stubborn, independent and headstrong. It will make a good companion if given consistent and firm training.

Living Conditions Can live outside in moderate climates but prefers to live inside with its family and have its exercise needs met outdoors.
Exercise Requires lots of daily physical and mental exercise.
Coat It has a single layered soft silky coat. The hair is soft, wavy, and non shedding.
Grooming Requires brushing once or twice a week.
Colors Blue or blue gray. Puppies are black or nearly black and lighten in color by 18 to 24 months of age.
Height and Weight Ideal weight is 32 to 40 pounds (14.5 to 18 kg) while the ideal height is 18 to 19 inches (45.7 to 48.3 cm). Variations may occur in individual animals.
Life Expectancy 13 to 15 years.
Group The AKC places the Kerry Blue Terrier dog in the Terrier group.
