The Komondor Dog

The Komondor Dog originates from Hungary in Eastern Europe dating back to antiquity. It is also known as the Hungarian Sheepdog. Its most unique and distinquishing feature is its heavy corded, 'felt-like' coat. This heavy coat has helped it survive harsh weather as well as afforded protection against predators including bears and wolves. When used as a guard dog, it is raised with the sheep and stays with them constantly. At first glance, the Komondor dog even appears to be just one of the flock (some are even shorn with the sheep in spring). But woe to any predator who comes to steal a sheep thinking that there is no guardian! The Komondor dog is a tough, rugged, and fearless protector. However, if raised as a companion, it is an even tempered, likeable and devoted pet, although it may tend to be somewhat independent. The Komondor came to North America in the 1930's and was recognized by the AKC in 1937. During World War II, numbers of this breed were very low, but breeding efforts since than have restored it to viability. It takes a lot of hard work to prepare a Komondor for the show ring, thus they are shown by relatively few but dedicated breeders. Use as a livestock guardian is on the increase in North America.
