The Lowchen dog originates for Europe dating back to the 1600's. Its name (pronounced Lerv-chun) means Little Lion Dog;
most Lowchens are traditionally trimmed in a lion-like cut. In France the breed is known as Le Petite Chien Lion (literally translated
The Little Dog Lion). Although its exact origins are unknown, it is believed to be related to the Bichon Frise and the
Havanese. It was admitted to the AKC in 1996 under the Miscellaneous group and moved to the Non Sporting group in 1999.
It is a rare breed and has only seen its popularity rise in the last two decades. It is a handsome and robust little companion.
