The Parson Russell Terrier Dog

The Parson Russell Terrier Dog originates from Great Britain dating back to the 1800's. It was previously known in North America as the Jack Russell Terrier. (The new name was recognized by the AKC in April of 2003.) Most of today's Parson Russell Terriers are descendent from a dog owned by the Parson John Russell of Devonshire England. The breed was developed to keep pace with horses during the fox hunt. As it accompanied the riders, its role was to bolt foxes. Today it is mainly a companion, but still has the terrier sense of adventure and excitement. It comes in a smooth and broken coat variety.
