The Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen Dog
The Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen dog (PBVG) originates from France dating back to the 1700's. Although related to both
the Basset Hound and the Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen, it is distinct. At one time the PBGV was shown with the Basset
Hounds in England and was erroneously considered to be a wire coated version of the Basset Hound. In France the Grand and the
Petit were often considered one breed and were interbred until the 1970's. It was bred to hunt rabbits in rough terrain thick
with underbrush. It is well suited for the task with a wirey coat for protection and short legs to get through tight spots. This
combined with great stamina made it an ideal hunter for the region of its origin. Its long French name is an apt description of
the breed: Petit - small, Basset - low, Griffon - rough coated, and Vendéen - the area of France from where it originated.
A relative newcomer to the AKC, the Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen dog was recognized on its own merrits in 1990. It is a
friendly and energetic dog that loves to run and play and is always on the lookout for adventure.
