The Pharaoh Hound Dog
The Pharaoh Hound Dog (sometimes misspelled as Pharoh Hound Dog) originates from Egypt dating back to antiquity. It is one of the oldest dog breeds - paintings
resembling this breed are found on ancient pyramid walls. As well, it is believed to be the model for the Egyptian god Anubis. There is speculation that the breed was brought to Malta and Greece over 2000
years ago by Phoenician traders. Today in Malta it enjoys the status of being the National Dog. It has remained pure and
distinct because of centuries of isolation.
The Pharaoh hound
retains a strong hunting instinct and if given the chance will hunt by sight, sound, and smell. One unique characteristic
is its tendency to blush (ears and nose) when it gets excited. The Pharaoh hound dog was introduced to Great Britain and to
America in the 1960's. It was recognized by the AKC in 1983.
