The Pomeranian Dog
The Pomeranian dog's original ancestors were much larger (and whiter) sled dogs from Iceland and Lapland.
Breeding to downsize likely took place in the region of Pomerania Germany in the 1800's, hence the
name Pomeranian. Although the modern breed is much smaller than its ancestors, it still retains a 'big dog'
temperament. Downsizing has been accompanied by emphasis on its fluffy coat giving it an unmistakable 'puff-ball'
appearance. Its intelligence and enthusiasm make it an ideal circus performer.
Popularity began to rise sharply for this breed when Queen Victoria of England imported one from Italy.
She became quite a fancier and soon established her own kennel for breeding Pomeranians. She preferred smaller dogs and
as result, many breeders followed here lead and continued the trend of downsizing the Pomeranian.
The AKC recognized the Pomeranian breed around 1900.
Besides Queen Victoria, other famous people in history who owned Pomeranians were Mozart, Marie Antoinette, and Emily Zola.
