The Poodle Dog

The modern Poodle dog originates from France dating back to the 1500's. Its ancestors likely came from Germany (the name poodle is derived from the German word, pfudel, meaning 'puddle' or 'to splash') where they were used as water retrievers and herders. It is likely the most intelligent of all dogs and easily adapts to any situation or household. Because of its intelligence it is easy to train. It makes a delightful, loving, devoted, and elegant companion. The AKC recognizes three categories for the Poodle: Standard, Miniature, and Toy. All three categories are still one breed, differing only in size. Some recognize a fourth category between the miniature and the standard called the medium. The Poodle is one of the most common breeds in North America today.

Origin France, Germany and possibly other central European countries - 1500's
Original Use Water retriever, herding, performer, companion
Use Today Companion
Temperament It is lively, playful, responsive and obedient. It is loyal and devoted to its family, often to only one individual. The miniature and standard are very intelligent and eager to please. The toy may not share the intelligence of its larger cousins.
