The Samoyed Dog

The Samoyed dog originates from Northern Asia dating back to ancient times where it lived with nomadic tribes of the same name. It was used to herd and guard reindeer herds which were essential for the survival of the Samoyed people. It was also used for hunting and pulling, although this was a lesser role. The dogs were really part of the family and lived right inside the tent of its owners. At night, an additional role was to help keep people warm, especially young children. Finally, hair from the Samoyed was also used to make yarn and clothing.

The breed was introduced to England in the late 1800's and to America in the early 1900's.

In more recent times the Samoyed has been used on dog teams accompanying polar expeditions, including a trip to the South Pole in 1911.

Distinguishing characteristics include upward curling lips that make it appear have a permanent smile, small wide set ears, and a magnificent white coat.
Although the Samoyed dog still carries the herding and working instinct, it is also content to be a companion and live a life of leisure. It is a very gentle dog and does not exhibit the aggressiveness seen in other sled dogs.

Because of its heavy grooming requirements, its constant shedding, and its somewhat independent nature, the Samoyed may not be suitable for some first time owners.
