The Schipperke Dog

Although controversy exists over the exact origins of the Schipperke dog, it is believed to have descended from dogs that guarded barges in Belgium as far back as the 1500's. It became the national dog of Belgium during the nineteenth century and was by far the most popular breed at the time. In 1885 Queen Marie Henriette acquired a Schipperke. As often happens when royalty takes pride in a certain breed of dog, the masses follow suit. Popularity of the breed soar in the years following. The breed was soon exported to England and in the early 20th century was introduced in America. Today it is moderately popular.
