The Scottish Deerhound Dog
The Scottish Deerhound dog originates from Scotland dating back to the Middle Ages and possibly much earlier. At one time this aristocratic and classy breed was owned exclusively by Scottish Nobility. Used mainly for deer hunting, it was quite popular three centuries ago. During the 1700's several events occurred to reduce this breed's numbers. The thick forests that were home to most of the deer were lost to clearing to make room for civilization. As well, the introduction of guns for hunting and the disappearance of the clan system decimate the Scottish Deerhound dog's numbers. A focused breeding program by many large estates restored numbers during the 1800's, only to be interrupted by World War I. It has been said that the Scottish Deerhound may be
low in numbers but makes up for it by being high in quality. Today, they are actually more popular in South Africa than in either Great Britain or in North America.
