The Shiba Inu Dog

The Shiba Inu dog originates from Japan dating back to antiquity. It is the smallest of the native Japanese breeds. It is capable of making a variety of sounds including a 'yodeling' and shrieking sound. Also, some bark a lot. It has been nicknamed the 'little bush dog', a reference to its use as fearless hunting dog. The Shiba Inu came to North America after WW II and has enjoyed a slow but steady increase in popularity since that time.

Temperament It is loving and responsive to its family. It is willing to please and charming. It is bold and not afraid of other dogs or animals and is very territorial, firmly defending against any intruder. Can be stubborn and independent if not properly trained.

Height and Weight Weight range is 20 to 29 pounds (9.1 to 13.2 kg) while the height range is 14 to 16 inches (35.6 to 40.6 cm). Variations may occur in individual animals.
Life Expectancy 12 to 15 years.
Group The AKC places the Shiba Inu dog in the Non Sporting group.
