The Soft Coat Wheaten Terrier dog originates from Ireland dating back to the 1700's. It was bred to be an all around versatile farm dog. Like most terriers it was expected to dispatch vermin. In addition it was used to herd livestock plus act in the capacity of guard dog. It is believed to be related to both the Kerry Blue Terrier and the Irish Terrier. It was a late comer to North America and today enjoys only moderate popularity. It was recognized by the AKC in 1973.

Temperament	It is one of the more even tempered and easy going members of the terrier group. It is affectionate, loyal and generally responsive to its family, although it can have its stubborn times. It loves to play and has a lot of energy.

Coat	It has a single layered soft wavy coat that feels silky to the touch. The hair is long and wavy.
Grooming	Requires brushing two or three times a week.
Colors	Wheat colored
Height and Weight	weight range is 30 to 42 pounds (13.6 to 19 kg) while the height range is 17 to 19 inches (43.2 to 48.3 cm). Variations may occur in individual animals.
Life Expectancy	12 to 13 years.
Group	The AKC places the Soft Coat Wheaten Terrier dog in the terrier group.
