The Staffordshire Bull Terrier Dog
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier dog originates from Great Britain. It was bred to be both a ratter and a fighting dog.
In addition, it was bred not to be aggressive towards people, since it had to be handled by humans while being on guard
in the presence of other fighting dogs. After dog fighting became illegal, this breed still found many admirers.
Today the show ring has become the acceptable form of competition.
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is sometimes confused
with the American Staffordshire Terrier and the American Pit Bull Terrier (plus cross breeds of these
three) and termed a "pit bull". There is common ancestry and a complicated history behind the three breeds,
but they are not the same. In fact the term 'pit bull' is a derogatory term used to discredit one or more of these
breeds as dangerous and unpredictable. One additional complication is that the AKC does not recognize the
American Pit Bull Terrier, while the UKC does.
