The Terrier Dogs
The Terrier dogs group is an interesting collection of dog breeds that were developed to hunt rodents and vermin. Most terriers are quick tempered and have little acceptance of other dogs and animals. They
have a lot of energy that needs to be released in safe activities. They make good pets for the responsible owner.
Breeds in the terrier dogs group range from the largest and loveable Airedale Terrier down to the Parson Russell Terrier (formerly known by the AKC as the Jack Russell Terrier) which is the smallest in the group. At one time the Yorkshire Terrier belonged
to this group and ranked as the smallest breed. However, the Yorkshire Terrier is now placed in the Toy Dogs group.
The most interesting looking of the terrier dogs group would have to go to the mild and even tempered Bedlington Terrier. At first glance the Bedlington Terrier appears more like a lamb than a dog. But don't let looks deceive you, it most assuredly is a terrier!
Two of the breeds in this group, the American Staffordshire Terrier and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier are often lumped together with the American Pit Bull Terrier (recognized by the UKC) and incorrectly
referred to as pit bulls. In fact, pit bull is a derogatory term used to label these breeds as mean, vicious and unpredictable. There is much debate over this issue. This web site does not wish take sides in the debate but rather tries to provide descriptions of breeds in a concise and accurate manner.
A recent addition to the Terrier dogs group is the Glen of Imaal Terrier. This dog was formerly listed in the Miscellaneous group. I will add a description for this breed as soon as time permits.
