The Toy Dogs
The toy dogs group includes most of the small dog breeds. Most make excellent lap dogs and companions. All enjoy lots of human contact and always want to be with their family. They love people and will form strong bonds with their masters. Breeds in this group, in general, are better suited to limited living areas such as apartments and condominiums than the larger breeds. Being a small dog breed in no way diminishes its character; most are energetic, fun loving and will make any owner proud. If budget is a concern, remember these dogs cost less to feed and maintain than the larger breeds. As well, in general, toy dogs will out live most of the large breeds! When I first started working on publishing information on the toy dogs, I was fully intending to recommend two or three favourites. But as I researched these wonderful little companions, I quickly became aware that to recommend one, would be totally unfair to the others. I would have to recommend them all! They are all adorable!
The AKC recognizes the following breeds in this group.

A Little Dog's Prayer
A master who is firm and kind,
And understands a little dog's mind.
A soft pillow for my head,
While I sleep upon my bed.
A walk and a meal each day,
That's all I ask for when I pray.
