The West Highland White Terrier Dog

The West Highland White Terrier Dog originates from Scotland dating back to the 1800's. It shares a common ancestry with several other breeds including the Scottish Terrier, the Dandie Dinmont Terrier, the Cairn Terrier and the Skye Terrier. It was recognized as a separate breed at the beginning of the 20th century. Today it is quite a popular breed in North America, Europe, and Japan. Its popularity exists both in the show ring and as a family pet.

Temperament It is a loving and devoted companion. It is happy and always ready for a new game or adventure. It is more even tempered than many of the other terriers. It can have a stubborn streak. It likes to bark and dig.

Living Conditions Cannot live outdoors except in very favorable climates.

Coat It has a two layered coat. The outer coat is hard, straight and wiry. The undercoat is soft and shorter.
Grooming Requires brushing once or twice a week.
Colors White
Height and Weight Weight range is 15 to 22 pounds (6.8 to 10 kg) while the height range is 10 to 11 inches (25.4 to 27.9 cm). Variations may occur in individual animals.
Life Expectancy 13 to 14 years.
Group The AKC places the West Highland White Terrier dog in the Terrier group.
